Would You Trust a Drone to Respond to a School Shooting? | The InSight Out Show | Ep. 263
At least nine schools in Florida, Georgia, and Colorado are installing drones designed to respond to an active shooter. Called Campus Guardian Angels, the drones can launch inside a school, move through hallways with lights and sirens, spray pepper gel, and even ram a threat at high speed, all while being operated remotely by a team in Texas.
The company says a drone could reach a threat in about 15 seconds, and in an emergency like this, every second matters. But the technology also raises an uncomfortable question: in the chaos of students and teachers running through a hallway, how does a remote operator know with certainty who the threat is? Maybe this technology could save lives. But as we hand more responsibility to technology in the name of safety, how do we decide where speed helps and where human judgment still matters most?
Scripture (NIV): Proverbs 14:15 – “The simple believe anything, but the prudent give thought to their steps.”
Reflection Questions:
When a new technology promises greater safety, what questions should we be willing to ask before trusting it?
How do we balance the urgency to protect people with the wisdom to consider what could go wrong?
